The Use of Artifical Intelligence in Practising Speaking

Language teaching practises have really changed over the past decades. The usual dialogue practice has been taken over by Chatbots which can respond to the users in a few seconds, retrieving numerous amount of information covering countless topics. Just speak to the AI chatbots, they will respond to you.

But, wait a minute. You have to know the skill of prompting. Here, I shall list down something on prompting to facilitate your inteaction with the bots.

Here are some examples of good prompts for a search engine, focusing on clarity and specificity:

Specific Questions:

  • "What is the capital of France?" (Direct and clear)
  • "How to bake a chocolate cake?" (Action-oriented, includes details)
  • "Best restaurants in New York City near Times Square?" (Location-specific, includes criteria)

Informational Queries:

  • "History of the American Civil War"
  • "Symptoms of a common cold"
  • "Definition of photosynthesis"

Comparison and Contrast:

  • "Difference between Android and iOS"
  • "Compare the price of a Tesla Model 3 vs. a Toyota Camry"

Tips for Good Prompts:

  • Use keywords: Include the most important words related to your topic.
  • Be precise: Avoid vague language and use specific terms.
  • Consider location: If relevant, add your location to narrow results.
  • Use quotation marks: For exact phrases or titles.
  • Experiment with different wording: Try rephrasing your prompt if you're not getting the results you want.
